American Beautyberry

6 Oct

This is a native flowering shrub that grows naturally in my yard. It is an excellent plant for the home landscape. Large green leaves cover the plant all year, it blooms in spring, then sporadically throughout the year. Fall brings the bright purple berries. The birds will eat the berries once they are ripe enough – usually December – January making a nice winter food source.

Legend has it that rubbing  crushed leaves on your skin acts as a mosquito, deerfly and tick repellent. I haven’t noticed that it works though!
